The lion roars again in Margaret River

The coming together of good people for a good cause to create art for art’s sake... what could be more fulfilling for the creative soul!

On 21 March, 2009 the team from Gumption and other friends came together to create a massive sand sculpture for the Margaret River Festival on the river mouth – a place where the river ever so gently kisses the ocean.

We built a Marsupial Lion, a creature that roamed the region 15 000 years ago. A huge powerful animal, the reasons for its extinction are unknown. But it is assumed it was because of either climate change or human intervention, or both.

Not much has changed really in our world when you think of it.

We took on the challenge to raise awareness for Tenderfeet Education Centre and I would like to thank everyone that helped us out. In particular Stuart and Warren for their impressive carving techniques learnt on the job, and to Kate who was very handy with the water sprayer ensuring out beastie didn’t dry out before we had finished him. And also to Elly who ensured everyone that stopped to look got to hear about Tenderfeet.

Also a special thanks to Tracey for inviting us to be part of what was a great day!

After seven long hours of pounding and carving sand our creature was finished, poised on the edge of river looking for prey.

We raised a lot of money and a lot of interest on the day for Tenderfeet. Thank you to all those who listened and learned, and then kindly took the time to donate online to the kids in Kenya.

The whole day - the vibe, the laughter, the art – was an inspiration.
