Share“This is the beautiful moment. It’s symmetry, a symmetry . . . it’s finished now, it’s born, it’s had its life, and it wants to go.” – Peter Donnelly
As the tide moves out, the Sand Dancer moves in. With a rake and a stick, Peter Donnelly creates masterpieces upon the beaches of New Zealand. For over ten years he has set to work dancing across the sand creating images.
He doesn't plot these drawings out - he just makes a mark in the sand and then he begins to 'dance'.
These huge drawings in the sand start where he makes his first mark and continue until they finish or until the tide comes in to claim what belongs to the ocean.
Instinct and joy in creation. Something that is often forgotten - the whole point of the human condition is to create beautiful things.
For those that know of Gumption's love of sand you will guess why this guy inspires. To make something purely for the sake of making it, knowing it will never last, that is an incredibly liberating feeling.
There is a purpose in everything, and to me, Peter’s purpose is to inspire others to open their minds, to know that there is more than one angle to see the world from.
It's worth taking a look at this short documentary to hear his views on creativity. He has found a freedom most of us yearn for, but few have the courage to reach for.
:: inspiring creativity :: is a series of short posts by Gumption that highlights creative energy in any medium. For that is the purpose of good design and the creation process ... to inspire at a level deeper than the surface.
